We reached out to the Independent Educational Consultants Association (IECA) to get the inside scoop. Here's the top 12 things colleges prioritize, ranked in order of importance:
1. Academic Rigor is King: Forget coasting through easy classes. Colleges want to see you challenging yourself with the most rigorous curriculum available, like AP, IB, or dual enrollment courses.
2. Grades Still Matter (But Rigor Matters More): A high GPA is important, but acing those challenging courses shows colleges you're ready for the academic demands of higher education.
3. Meaningful Involvement Over Resume Padding: Don't join every club just to have a long list. Colleges are more impressed by deep involvement in a few activities that genuinely align with your interests.
4. Your Essay: A Chance to Shine: This is your opportunity to let your personality and values shine through! Craft an essay that tells your unique story and gives colleges a glimpse of who you are beyond the grades.
5. Leadership: Take Charge! Whether it's captaining the debate team or leading a community service project, colleges love to see students who take initiative and demonstrate leadership skills.
6. Test Scores: Still Relevant: While some schools are test-optional, strong ACT or SAT scores can still bolster your application.
7. Diversity is Valued: Colleges strive to create a diverse and interesting student body. Your unique background and experiences contribute to this goal.
8. Recommendations: Get Personal: Ask teachers and counselors who know you well to write letters of recommendation that provide insights into your strengths and character.
9. Special Talents? Show Them Off! Are you a gifted musician, a star athlete, or a coding whiz? Colleges are interested in students who can contribute to campus life in unique ways.
10. Intellectual Curiosity: Be a Lifelong Learner: Engage in research, pursue independent projects, and demonstrate a thirst for knowledge.
11. Character Counts: Colleges want students who are good citizens and will contribute positively to their community.
12. Demonstrated Interest: Show You Care: Visit campuses, connect with admissions staff, and engage with the school on social media to demonstrate your genuine interest.
