Champion is defined as a person who is brave, strong, or fierce when faced with adversity. I feel that is an apt description of this year’s seniors, the class of 2021.
Not only did these young adults have to tackle the time-consuming, anxiety-inducing, and frustratingly detailed process of college applications at the beginning of their senior year, they did so during a pandemic. Most did so without the daily fellowship or infusion of support from their friend group, having to sit at home week after week Zooming with teachers and peers.
But nothing would stop this group of champions in pursuing their goals of higher education! They bravely and fiercely wrote amazing personal essays, requested letters of recommendation from teachers they had not seen in six months, and detailed activities they are passionate about even if many of those activities had not resumed from the previous year.
Faced with stay-at-home mandates, social-distancing, and mandatory mask wearing in public, the class of 2021 bravely faced these adversities and leaned into their future. And the rewards have been sweet!
